710 Pipes Sees an Increase in Kratom Sales After the Passing of State Bill 22-120 that Regulates its Sale

SB22-120 instructs the Marijuana Enforcement Division to investigate regulating the sale of kratom, which is a plant that proponents say may serve as a safer alternative to opioids and may also help treat the symptoms of addiction withdrawal. The signing of the State Bill made Colorado the eighth state to adopt this legislative process for the sales of kratom. Starting in July, 2023, businesses that sell the plant will need to register with the state Department of Revenue and provide information regarding the kratom products they sell. As Russ Cowan of 710 Pipes noted, he and his team will closely adhere to the legislation regarding kratom, which will also include alerting state regulators if he or his team become aware of any negative effects from using the plant. “Kratom, also known as Mitragyna Speciosa, is a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia that is closely related to the coffee plant,” Cowan said, adding that it is a member of the Rubiaceae family and has been used for centuries by the indigenous people of Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia as a natural remedy for a variety of ailments. “Kratom is known for its unique properties, which include both stimulant and sedative effects.
